In order to test for drugs in race horses,  they are trained to pee after a race when someone whistles.

Hmm. Interesting to read the previous answers. When I used to hotwalk racehorses after their workouts, it always seemed that they peed gallons at a time. Peeing 'like a racehorse' always meant having to pee really lots and really urgently. But it seems there are other versions to that saying as well. They all agree, however, that when you gotta go, you gotta go!

in the good old days of horseracing, trainers used to make their horses "run" right before they used the bathroom. Timing was everything and since it was an easy process, it made the horse learn to run when it had to go.

lol your right, like if i have to pee really bad in school i'll go "i have to pee like a race horse" and now everyone says that in front of me lol they're such good friends

anyways, lol, idk maybe cuz race horses are so hyper and it looks like they have to pee a lot? lol

Have you ever see a horse pee? It's like someone turned on a waterhose. On a related note,  if someone makes a lot of noise peeing,  you can say "sounds like a horse pissing on a flat rock." Classy, huh?

They pee about four quarts every few hours or so.  We're talking about GALLONS of pee in a day.

Many racehorses were drugged on various elixirs, and even cocaine ("hop") before drug testing became common (and now many run on legal drugs...)  Many of those drugs acted as a diuretic making the huge amount of urine a horse can expel at a given time even larger.
