When you hire a car in portugal and leave a deposit on your credit card do you use their chip and pin.........

technology or just sign. I have paid for the car in the uk and am picking the car up in Faro airport next saturday morning (9th August). I want to take out the excess insurance by credit card but being an old duffer have forgotten my pin!! i can call the card provider to send another one but am worried it might not come in time. If i dont have to use the pin all is fine (and i will have passport for proof of id). I dont need my card for anything else as I take cash. I am using Guerin car company via Carhire 3000 (UK)

I never needed the pin to rent a car therefore I would say you probably do not need to give it either. But I do not know your hire company.
