  1. What Service?

AF - you report to the Tech Training.  You have the time to shop on base and make calls home.

Other Services like the USMC allow you to go home for leave and visit with friends and family prior to advance training.

  2. At least for the Army, expect very little free time while in basic. The time that you do get will be spent cleaning, writing letters and getting ready for the next day. They may march you as a unit to a shopping center to buy needed items and get a hair cut every couple of weeks but that is about it. You will be able to call home some but do not expect it daily..or weekly even.

They have a few weeks to take you from civilian to Soldier and they need every bit of it.

  3. Once you get to Basic Training, for the first few days will probably be a blur of confusion. You won't have time to call.

Once you get into the routine, you may have some time to phone home. It usually depends upon the guy who's in charge. Sometimes permission to call home...  or anywhere else... is based upon your performance. Most likely the time you have will be limited.

  4. You mean the day you leave Basic?  Or for the rest of your military career?

The day I left Basic they drove all of us to the airport at 4 in the morning regardless of when are flights were.  Mine wasn't until 6 pm so I had 13 hours to do whatever I wanted.

As for when you're in the military, yes you have free time to use the phone and go to stores.

  5. You might get 5 minutes here or there but don't expect it.  Expect nothing and then you will be happy for anything you get.

    You are there to train.

After Basic will be easier and you will be given more freedom. Until then just focus on passing Basic Training. Good luck!
