When you look in a mirror....confusing question?

Ok I've been wondering this for a while, and it's going to be really hard to explain but here I go.

Let's say I stand 5 feet away from a mirror. When I look at the mirror and see my reflection, is that what I look like if someone was looking at me from 5 feet away or from 10 feet away? I'm only 5 feet from the mirror, so is my reflection 5 feet away or 10 feet from my actual body?

I don't know if mirrors show depth and stuff so I was just wondering that. If you're confused, I will put additional info up.

  1. your mirror reflection is 10 feet away because the mirror is 5 feet from your actual body and then from the mirror to the reflection it is another 5 feet

    5 feet+5 feet=10 feet

  2. 10 feet away, I found this out like a week ago lol

  3. A two-dimensional object has no depth. A mirror (the reflection, that is) is a two-dimensional object. Do the math.

  4. Stand right next to the mirror, and look at an object in the mirror that is 5 feet away.  It looks to be 5 feet deep in the mirror.

So, if you're 5 feet away, your apparent image seems to be 10 feet away from you.

  5. Your reflected image would look similar to someone standing 10 feet away.  Imagine that it was a glass wall (or even an opening).  Now have two twins stand nose to nose at the glass.  If each one backs up 5 feet, they are 10 feet apart.  Same thing with the reflections.
