When you make a CAT1-approach, you have a DH not less than 200 ft. But why is the DH in Munich at 170 ft?

  1. Gotta agree with thudley, parenthasis designate HAT not anything military. I've been to Munich many times and don't know the answer to this one either but it is another country so the FARs wouldn't apply. But hey, what's 30 feet.

  2. Hmmm, Cherokee: the minima in parents is the actual height above the touchdown zone. Check the plate. If you subract the TDZ height from the mins you get 170'. Not just for military pilots.

I'm stumped on this one. It's not a mis-print, but I am not aware of any CAT-I approach that goes below 200' DH. I'm awaiting word from some of my cronies, but none of them knew about it either.

EDIT: No sweat, Cherokee. I've been in the flying game for 45 years, and I learn something every day. I appreciate the edit from the top contributor.

The parents mins are the same on the U.S. plates. They just give the pilot a quick glance at HAT, rather than having to do the math each time.

I still have no answer to the question, but I agree with the other posts. I don't know why the CAT-1 mins are on the CAT-II page.

  3. All minima in parentheses not applicable to Civil Pilots

it is for the use of Military pilots

EDIT: Thudley, you are dead wrong. take a look at the FAA'S instrument flying handbook, chapter 8, page 8-26, figure

    8-20 ( Terms/Landing Minima Data.)

2nd edit: After further investigation, I must admit I am wrong.

Thudley, I apologize , you are quite correct

This is an example of why PP VFR/Day ratings are easily exchanged by simple application and payment in other nations that you visit, but if you want IFR priviledges, you'll have to test for those.

    I stand corrected.

I did not consider that the rules are different elsewhere. I learned something tonight!!! For that, I thank you!.

  4. Link us to the relevant legend page.

The German charting authority doesn't use FAA format.

  5. The only thing I can figure out is that on the upper right hand corner of the approach plate the title states "NON STANDARD ILS CAT II & CAT III or LOC"

But I can't figure out why it says CAT I minimums.
