  1. From the withers (the shoulders, where the neck joins with the body) to the ground, when the horse is unshod.  1 hand is 4 inches, traditionally the breadth of the palm of a hand, funnily enough!


  2. youre going to measure from the base of the withers, all the way to the ground.

  3. You measure from the top of the withers to the ground, with the tape measure straight up and down.  Make sure the horse is standing on a solid, level surface.
