When you move out of your parents house for the first time, who gets the furniture?

I'm moving out in a couple of weeks and I was just wondering who would usually keep the furniture. I mean it is mine but they bought it to furnish the room and when I move out my younger brother will be living in that room. But if I don't take the furniture that means that I have absolutely no furniture and I'll have to get an air mattress untill I can afford some furniture.

  1. The furniture belongs to your parents.  Ask them if you can have it.

  2. moving out on your own for the first time is the best! your whole family/friends parents will give you all of their old c**p that they don't want anymore. you will seriously be able to furnish your entire house without buying really anything. just tell your parents to ask their friends for stuff. i have lived on my own since i was 17 (now 26) and I'm still using some of the stuff i got when i got my first house. i'm saving money to buy some great new furniture. it's awesome!

  3. It ain't yours! Unless you bought it and have reciepts for it ! It is your parents! Welcome to "Grown-up land!"  Check out the free section on craigslist and yardsales, it may not be pretty but who cares ! I used  to use a lot of  cheap stackable crates  and remember " The more stuff you gots,  the more stuff you gots to move ! "

  4. Goodness gracious... Silly, you need to ask your parents... It all depends on what the say in the end.  Congrats on moving out though!  Lots os new and fun things will be in your future! :)

  5. You shouldn't move out until you have a job and can afford to actually support yourself. What's the rush?

  6. The parents actually own the furniture, unless it was given to you as a gift at any time.  Parents will usually let you take it with you, but they are not obligated to.  Fact is, either you or your parents will have to spring for new furniture.  Just ask them nicely about it, and don't get mad if they want to keep it for another sibling.

  7. Your parents own the furniture, but they may let you take your own bedroom things. When my daughter moved out let her take her bedroom things, her grandmother's dishes, some pots & pan, glassware etc. Even my microwave and I got a new one. See how much your parents are willing to help. Shop yard sales, garage sales and second hand stores to pick up other things you'll need. Once you have enough to live comfortably, you can start saving to get one new thing at a time. Avoid charge cards so you don't find yourself in debt and not be able to pay your rent. Good Luck. Moving out can be an exciting time.

  8. USUALLY THE PARENTS WILL LET YOU TAKE THE BEDROOM FURNITURE, BUT DON'T ASSUME-ASK THEM

  9. It’s not yours; you didn’t pay for it. Your parents can choose to give it to you, but they should keep it since their money bought it.

Most of us start out with next to nothing in our first places.  There’s Craig’s List, Goodwill, the night before trash day/dumpster diving.

Unless you’re being forced to move out, why not wait until you have some money saved? Supporting yourself isn’t cheap even when you’re not trying to buy furniture.
