  1. It is a personal choice. You can press the clutch all the way down and leave the car in gear whilst breaking, or you can put it in neutral (and probably brake if you're on a slope...)

It is safer to put the car in neutral because if your car is hit (unlikely but possible...) you probably won't leave your feet in the same place which will cause your car to jump forward (stall...) which could be dangerous. (At least this is how my driving instructor taught me)

If you are talking about when you park you should put it in neutral.

  2. If your car has no clutch you can do as you say.  If it has a clutch you need to step on the clutch when you stop.  You shift to low gear and slowly release the clutch and accelerate when you want to move.  Stepping on the clutch takes it out of gear.  Releasing the clutch puts it in gear.

  3. If you know you are going to stop, if you leave the car in gear, or select a lower gear, then take your foot off the gas, the engine will help the brakes to slow the car down. Press the clutch in before you come to a stop to avoid stalling the engine. If it's an emergency stop, leaving it gear might help too.

  4. You can do it both ways. But my driving instructor told me that it is better to step on your clutch(engage in gear) instead of putting it in neutral when you are stopping your car as the brakes function properly that way.
