Question:

When you order a chili dog, should it be assumed you're getting a hot dog as part of the item?

A friend of mine claims where he lives (a very rural area in Virginia) that when he orders a chili dog anywhere there, he has to make sure to tell the person waiting on him that he actually wants the hot dog. Otherwise, they will just give him a bun with chili in it and no hot dog. Is this something very strange that only applies to his area or is it something done in other regions as well? I've ALWAYS thought that a hot dog was implied when you ordered a chili dog.

  1. Yes! That's the 'dog' part in 'chili dog'!

  2. It wouldn't be a chili dog around here.   That would be Po' Folk food.

  3. I, of course, agree with you and all of the previous posters. The onions, cheese, and slaw should be the optional parts of a ChiliDog not the frakfurter. But, hey it's the variety that makes this nation so much fun.

  4. so did i! but i guess not everywhere is the same!!! there are ppl out there dat might eat it lik that. who knows? but one thing is for sure its prolly only where he lives

  5. In South Carolina at checkers you have to make sure you say hot dog because if you order a chili dog-as written on their menu-they give you chili on a bun. I'm with you, it should be assumed but some places don't

  6. Chili dog = Chili + Hot Dog

Chili dog = Chile + nothing = You're in Virginia where family members can marry on another...  lol.

  7. How could it be a chili "dog" without a hot dog?  Looks like otherwise it would be a chili sandwich.  I live in W Ky but have been all over the US and have never known of a chili dog not haveing a fot dog on it.

  8. h**l Yeah !!! if you don't, that's false advertising. You should get a bun, hot dog, chili and maybe cheese & onions. If you don't, its non-american and they need to be slapped.

  9. Of course it includes the hot dog!  What else would the "dog" refer to in Chili Dog?
