  1. Yes it stays white, or a different color than the walls....normally white. It makes the room 'pop' and keeps it from looking like its caving in. If you're going to paint the walls and you have the time and money, give the ceiling a fresh coat!

  2. she probably doesnt want you to paint the ceiling, the ceiling will stay white unless you paint it.

  3. Most people keep their ceilings white..

But you don't have to my daughter painted her room and she painted her ceiling and I have to say it looks good. I think that painting the ceiling or leaving it white is a preference thing.

Honestly there is no wrong or right answer...

  4. most of ours are white or  off white like ice cream

  5. personally I don't think you necessarily have to leave the ceiling white. I have colored my entire room the same color and it turned out beautiful.

  6. yeah it's easy to leave a ceiling white but i like a light bright aqua!

  7. This is tricky sometimes!

Ok, if your room is small and you want your room to look taller, paint your cieling a deep color (matching your interior). If your room is small and you want to make the dementions of your furniture stand out, keep it white.

Another way to tell is to check out www.hgtv.com

they have GREAT ideas for painting cielings and rooms at that.

I think that if you have a lot of dark or deep colored items in that room (big or small) keep it white. But then again, if your items are neutral in color, give that cieling a definition! Paint it! Just don't pick a light color, it will make your room off balance and seem too cluttered.

    Good luck and happy paintings!

  8. You can paint the ceiling any color you want.  if you paint it the lighter shade of the color of your walls, then the room will appear bigger.  I think that white is boring and spicing it up is always great.  and it's pretty easy - just put some newspapers or large garbage bags on the floor, mask out the sections and paint.

  9. The reason it is good to keep the ceiling white is so that the color you are painting the walls does not box the entire room in and make it look smaller.

  10. You don't have to keep the ceiling white, but it does keep the room less dark if you do. Also, you might want to refresh the white paint so it doesn't look dingy. And remember-- whatever you choose, do the ceiling first so that you don't have ceiling paint drip down on the wall.

I just painted a room and was going to put a very light sky blue, but instead just freshened up the old white paint, with ....white!

  11. It makes a big difference having the contrast of a white ceiling to go with the color of your choice in wall color.  If you paint the whole room including the ceiling the room not only looks smaller but less appealing and ends up resembling a dungeon.  My girlfriend painted her bathroom in its entirety all one color and it was the first thing I noticed.  I was like WTF were you thinking.  The nice part about applying a fresh coat of ceiling paint prior to painting your walls is that if you get color paint on the ceiling by accident it makes it very easy to cover up your mistakes with the ceiling paint.  You can still do this without a fresh coat on the ceiling, but over time the white will dull and you will see the difference in whites once you touch up without using the same white paint.

  12. The ceiling is just like the room, A blank canvas, you do what you wish.

WHite adds height to a tiny room, but A blue sky with puffy clouds is great in a child's room, Other colors can be used to pull a ceiling that is too high down to earth.

I have a half bath just off my kitchen, the whole thing is a green and growing garden, from real plants in the sunny windows to the stenciling on the walls and ceilings.  Just do as you personally wish, after all you live there.

  13. You typically keep ceilings white.  Flat white is the optimal color to make 8 foot ceilings look taller.  Many times it is smart to repaint the ceiling even if it is white before you paint your walls.  It is easier to paint the ceiling and not tape the walls than waiting till after you paint the walls.  If you are considering a color on the ceiling here are some tips:

Ceiling is less than 8 feet.

Choose a color that is in the same family, but much lighter to make ceiling look taller.

Ceiling is more than 8 feet.

Choose a color that is same family, but a little darker to make look shorter.

I like to put a little bit of color even if it is standard 8 foot ceilings.  Your eyes draw attention to the ceiling because it is so stark difference to a wall with any color to it.  Even a light color such as Antique white adds character.  You can also get creative, a cloud ceiling in a kids room, or dark red in a theater room.  HGTV.com and Diynetwork.com have many ideas.

  14. "Always paint the ceilings white" is a piece of conventional wisdom that many people unquestioningly accept. Most of the time it's correct, but not always.

A white ceiling can make a ceiling look higher IF there's a marked contrast between the walls and the ceiling. If the wall colour is too close to white the ceiling can actually appear lower, especially in a larger room with eight-foot ceilings. Off-white walls can also look dingy and dirty when compared to a white ceiling, especially if there's no crown moulding separating the two.

Pure white can also make imperfections like unevenness, patched holes, and the like more obvious, especially in a small well-lit room like a bathroom or a walk-in closet. Painting the ceiling the same colour as the walls (using a flat finish) will make the imperfections less noticeable. The problem is that having the same colour on ceiling and walls can make the room feel cramped: the solution to this is to use a light, warm colour that's dark enough to contrast clearly with white but not so dark that it visually shrinks the room. The Ralph Lauren colour Cottonwood is a good example. It helps to have some white in the room - say, trim or tub surround.

Higher ceilings don't always need the help of white to make them soar and may very well look better painted in a tone that matches the floor, so that the ceiling doesn't look *too* high.
