  1. When you're parked on the shoulder of the highway you're a sitting duck.  Whoever said you should be out of the car is right.  You should move everyone out of the car and keep them about 30 feet away from the roadway, and slightly BEHIND the line of the back bumper on divided highways, and in front of the front bumper on non-divided (two-lane) roads..  Too often people don't see the car as being stopped, or they pass by too closely, hitting the vehicle and causing serious damage.  Why take a chance?  Just watch SPIKE TV or TruTV and you'll eventually see a "Most Shocking" episode where someone doesn't pay attention to vehicles on the sides of the roads.

  2. Let's compare:

Inside -- surrounded by a ton of steel armor, seat belted and secure for safety.

Outside -- pretty much open to whatever happens and screwed if something does, no matter WHERE they are located.

Children stay in the car -- PERIOD!!!!

  3. Outside the car, and off of the freeway. If that's unpossible, I'd say behind the car between the car and the edge of the freeway.

  4. outside off the shoulder in the grass. out of harms way

  5. if just stopped then inside, if changing tire- outside and as far away from road as possible

  6. In the car where they are protected

  7. From all that I have read and seen it would be safer for the kids to wait as far away from the vehicle as possible and it would be a lot safer for the person changing the flat as well because he or she does not need kids jumping all around inside vehicle while doing this.
