  1. if i like the name of it lol

  2. At the moment I only bet on one horse which has the names of my two grandaughters. Its done quite well.

  3. check all his races and see what kinda track he likes or weather

it all depends on how he feels on the terrain

  4. When I used to do it I used to look at last years form, the current season and generaly visualise a graph of those stats to see if the race was going to be a winner.

I would take into account what ground the horse runs on best, what the local weather is like, ground conditions and if theirs any handycap and what weight the horse is carrying.

The next factor was the betting odds, I would look at the forcast and then pick a horse.

Although it never picked that many winners, I wuld often get 4th & 3rd place and lots of 2nd's which IF i had my whits about me I would have bet on and done a cover bet.

  5. Make sure it has four legs.

  6. It's a losers game, I just tend to go for the name I like but never win. You can follow the form, you can try to work it out using stats but at the end of the day it's luck, the bookies always win in the end!!!!

  7. Female trainer.  Irish Horse. Irish jockey.

  8. Could tell you---but then I would have to kill you!

OK give you a clue, today, Saturday I am backing "Peace Offering" in the 3-55 Chester

  9. Ime still trying to work it out ...if i dont get a winner on saturday ime packing it in ,,,,i said that Mon , Tue Wed,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  10. A friend of mine is a trainer, his horse came 2 nd in the grand national so if i bet,i bet  on one of his horses, though dont bet often

  11. good looking jockey

    cute name

or when in doubt, bet the grey

  12. I go to the paddock before the race and look at the muscle tone, the feisty-ness of the horse, the prior races and track conditions.  For the horses you like, then go with the one that has good odds.  Horses around 5-1 will pay nicely when they fit into the above criteria.

Plus, when a mid-shot like that wins, you feel great!

  13. I like to look at past performances weighed against workouts. That doesn't always mean that horse will win..Sometimes the other horse just wants it more, but usually a horse that has performed consistently and has had good steady workouts almost always comes out on top. I never bet on horses that seem flighty, or worked up... That usually indicates that the horse is distracted and won't focus on the race. Calm horses are focused horses.

Well trained racehorses know how to win, they WANT to win..So keeping track of a training and workout schedule can give you a pretty good idea what sort of racer you are betting on.

Of course sometimes I can't resist a pretty face with a funny name.. :P

  14. I have two tipsters that I follow through thick and thin. They only tip in major televised races

  15. check the form its last 5 races whos riding it and the ground its won on before and check the weight it going to be carrying

  16. Its just amazing how many people dont get this!

To bet on horses and win you need to work out, for each horse, what you think are the fair odds against it winning - certainly taking account of all the factors that other answerers cite.  But you should only bet on the horse if your estimate of the fair odds make it significantly more likely to win than the odds you get offered by the bookmaker. So if you think a horse is 10-1 against and you can get odds of 20-1 then bet on it.  If you can only get 8-1 then dont.   Assuming that its a fair race, if you are right on average in your assessment of odds then you will win on average.  If you are not right then you will lose.

The point is that its a game of odds, not picking the horse you think is most likely to win or some particular pattern, or name.

Of course, if the whole thing is crooked then you can only win on average if you have inside information.  Thats why I wont bet on horses.

  17. i put all the names in a hat and randomly select, leaving it to fate is the best way!!!

  18. I agree with everything which "in the trade" says except that it is not so crooked as people wish to believe - for one reason because in a horse race there are several possible outcomes whereas in some sports there are 2 or 3 only.  There is hardly a sport taking place which has not been found crooked at some time; snooker, cricket, soccer, boxing, cycling have all been exploited unfairly for gain. In every sport you care to mention there are surprise results from time to time but horseracing seems to get most of the crooked backlash because inexpert punters have got to find someone to blame for their own bad punting.   Knowledge, common sense and discipline are necessary for this game, although it is far from easy but it is naive of the incognoscenti to rule out success.
