Thanks.

Hoping that it could work {lol} by just merely putting the wooden frame on the ground, then layer w/a LOT of good soil mixture, then simply planting.

It's for corn.

  1. Corn  will grow without all the hoopla, just rotor-till ground, dig some straight rows and plant 2 or 3 inches deep ,water and let it go! Throw some 40/40 fertilizer on the ground you are tilling before you plant! Check your seed pack for your area as to planting and Harvest! May be to late this season!

  2. BYE A FENCE AND PUT IT NEAR IT

  3. I would at least weed out the grass and roots and irragate the area so not much grows in the garden after putting down dirt. But no, not digging shouldn't be a problem.

  4. We have six raised beds.    All the sides are 8-inches tall.  Three of them did not get the soil dug out.  We just dumped in top soil and compost, raked it all in and planted the seeds.  The other beds were dug in for root vegetables that need more than 8 inches to grow in.

What is more important is the composition of the soil.  It should be light enough for water to drain through, but not too clayey to cause root floodings.

So no, you don't NEED to dig beforehand, but loosening the ground soil beforehand doesn't hurt, either.  I have pole and bush beans growing in those undug raised beds right now.

PS--we have sweet corn growing in another raised bed, also undug and the corn's a few weeks from harvest.  We keep th corn well-fertilized.

Adding good balanced fertilizer will be as important as the soil you use in your garden.

  5. Lay down weed barrier first, then your frame and follow that with compost mixed with Milorganite fertilizer, a pound of granulated sugar, 5 ounces of creme of tartar, 2 pounds of epsom salt and 2 pounds of twenty mule-team borax. Mix well before spreading in the frame.  As the corn begins to mature, put a cup of apple juice in the ground near the stalk and follow with a quart to a gallon of water.
