  1. As the previous answer say its just the pressure of the air being release. The tighter balloon is inflated the tighter the rubber is stretched the quicker it snaps away an and the more sudden the air is released. The louder the pop

    There is a "factoid" going around that the rubber exceeds the the speed of sound and this causes the pop. However examination of slow motion film of a balloon - shows that the rubber never reaches any where near the speed of sound.


  2. The balloon's walls are under high pressure, when popped the pressure is released all at once through the small whole which causes a loud sound to be produced.
