  1. Whether you use an on-line broker or an in-houe broker, all orders are entered and routed the same way, so it doesn't matter how the order is entered

All orders, if entered the proper way have the same of chance of being executed.

So it's totally immaterial what means are used to enter an order.

The important deciding criteria is the price as it is relative to the market and any limitations and/or qualifiers you put on the older.

If you enter a "market" order it will be executed, if you enter an order within the current quote, it will be executed.

  2. It depends on the trading volume for the shares that you want to buy.

If there is someone willing to sell the shares you want at the price you want.  Then your buy order will be executed and you will buy the shares.

But for some very small companies.  People who own shares may not be willing to sell at the time you want to buy.  And you may have to wait for some time for a seller to come along and sell the shares to you.

  3. Depends on the type of trade you go for: that is, whether you specify the price you're willing to pay/sell at, or whether you buy/sell at the market price - in the second case you're virtually guaranteed your buy/sell order will go through provided there is a high enough volume of shares being traded at the time to meet your request. If you specify your own price, there's no guarantee at all you'll have someone be willing to buy/sell at that price if you're way off the mark or the market price moves away from your offer.

  4. It depends on the price you want to buy it at and how much trading is going on. If you put a reasonable price for a stock that is traded a lot (i.e. yahoo, microsoft, etc...) chances are you will get it. Even a stock that is not traded frequently you should be able to get pretty easily with a reasonable ask.

    Good luck
