Question:

When you single crochet, do you go under one thread or two?

I know different people do it different ways. I'm just curious.

  1. When you sc into a stitch, unless the pattern tells you to work in the front or the back of the loop, you work under both sides of the loop.  Different patterns and textures use both or one or the other, but, in general, if your pattern does not say to work under the front or back, you will work under both.  Working under one side or the other gives you a raised pattern on the surface of the crochet.


  2. Unless the pattern tells you to use front or back loops only, you go under both of the threads.  Going under both keeps your pattern even.  Using either the front or the back gives you free loops which will form a ridge on your piece.

  5. I go under two. Sometimes a pattern will call for you to go in the back loop only so then it will form a ridge in the pattern. I like doing the ripple pattern when making afghans and this is an example of working in the back loop only.
