Is it a wonder that you can think at all?

I thought that opening line of the song makes a good question.

  1. I was borned and brought up in Malaysia. High school was crappy because we have to do well in Malay language in order to graduate. So you spend years studying a language that can't be used anywhere else.

  2. May have agreed with you 20 years ago, however now that I am a couple of months away from finishing a degree and am heading on to post grad I can see that learning is incremental and that learning the boring stuff primes your brain for greater things.  Enjoy.

  3. You learned something in High School? Wish I had had your teachers. I could use them at my college.

  4. My lack of education never hurt me none

I can read the writing on the wall

  5. Nobody tells you the real truth about this, but the only reason we go to school is to be set up by society to follow their innovative plan to make us believe that working for a living is mandatory and MUST be done. You see, if they didn't set it up that way, and teach us to do it their way or think it their way, while we were young and impressionable, nobody would work. Think about it.....

What do you use today in everyday life that was required for study in school? Other than those who are in medical professions or teaching or similar professions. Does anyone really care why or when the fall of the Roman Empire took place? Do you need to really know the square root of 3 x 2/8 (4+9) = ? Who uses trigonometry in their daily life, other than engineers or architects, for example?

Look at those who broke away from the "norm" and created their own unique lifestyles - musicians, poets, writers, any kind of artist. These people are never fully appreciated in what they do and are considered "rejects by society" in some form because they didn't follow the "rules" set for them in the first place. Think about it again. If you could do something in your life which is "fun" or "enjoyable" - that's taboo to society. The general working joe has a job that pays too little and the hours are too long. To get to their job, they have to spend 2-3 hours commuting one way every day. Many have cars to pay for, mortgages, bills, credit cards, families to feed and take care of.... the list is endless.

My theory? Get a decent college degree in something you love to do. Then go out and get a rock band started or go solo as an artist. Then when you get some decent money coming in, travel the world and see all you can. Forget the mortgage, kids, bills, communte. People do that because they think they should, or because their parents did, or grandpa says it's the way to make your mark in life. If you want a family, great. But I'm saying don't choose things in life that you think you "should" do because of society's pressure. I never did listen well - even as a child. Yet despite my personal circumstances, I did just fine.

Yes, I believe that opening line says it all......

  6. I went to a free school before going on to public schools. It was bliss as we learned how to learn so that by the time I got to Grammar (equivalent to your high school) I was able to see what was happening to me to quote another song

    Pink Floyds -

    Another Brick in the Wall

    We don't need no education

We dont need no thought control

No dark sarcasm in the classroom

    Teachers leave them kids alone

Hey! Teachers! Leave them kids alone!

All in all it's just another brick in the wall.

All in all you're just another brick in the wall.

So I was able to work out later what I really wanted to learn and they didn't spoil anything on me for that long but if i hadn't had the earlier experience of learning being in my control I think I would have let them destroy my mind.

  7. I guess it depends on who the teacher is, as well as what a student puts an effort in learning. I had a history teacher who was fun and nice but I wasn't to into history and remembering dates and facts is not my best skill but he tried to make the class interesting so it was enjoyable. I had an Algebra teacher who was a hard ***. I don't think many students liked him but I did. I'm not the best in math but he was a good teacher and I learned something in his class, maybe not the quadratic formula (calculator or computer please) ;) He was tough but fair.

As for the song I like it for the photography slant and I enjoyed taking a photo class (not in high school though).
