When you think of a typical ships porthole, does it have 6...or 8 rivet blobs, in the brass surround?

  1. Well as you can plainly see from your own links it can be either. I really don't think it makes that much difference, the designers just made them a little differently from each other is all.


  2. The rivet blobs you ask about in you question, shown in the links,  are the bolt / rivet pattern the the porthole would be mounted to the vessel with.  The more bolts / rivets that hold the porthole the more pressure it should with stand.  

    The more of a chance that the porthole would be hit by a strong wave the more bolts or rivets you would want to have to make it with stand the force of the wave.
