When you turn 18 does your record get cleared

my bf just got out of jail he spent his birthday weekend in a juvenile center.he just turned 17.he got charged with robbery.and the state that were in is New Jersey...plz help.thanks

  1. It really depends.  If the court continues to treat him as a juvenile, then upon completion of his probation and/or supervision, his record is not cleared but is unavailable to the public... some referred to this as a sealed record.  But this does not automatically happen when he is 18.  Some States will maintain jurisdiction over the juvenile until he is 21 or occasionally even later... depending upon the seriousness of the case.

    If he is filed on as an adult, his information and conviction will be public record.

  3. The record can't be "cleared", but using the correct form (call Probation or the Court and request a Petition to Seal Record) you may request the file be sealed. Then nobody can open it and use the information inside.
