When you were a child, did a parent or relative ever offer to buy your toy drum, toy trumpet or noisemaker ?

No. So when I got enough money to do it I started buying that kind of thing and giving it to any kids who would take it. Parents basically hated me for giving their kid something that would make noise all the time. Too bad. So sad. Sucks to be them. The kids loved it and that is what counts!

no-one ever offered to actually buy them, they just took the batteries out and acted like there weren't anymore.

Or they just happen to get missing.
