  1. The Up issues you a corporate lodging card. You use it when you check in the motel. The room is yours til they call you to go out again. You have to buy your own food.Lots of UP lodging places are Oak Tree Inns. They have exercise equipment, satellite tv and nice dark rooms for daytime sleeping. They also have onsite Penny's diners to eat at.

  2. Yes they do, and they pay for it too.  I'm a retired truck driver and my last bid run was to Sparks, Nevada.  The Union Pacific train crews working out of Roseville, California stayed at the same hotel that my company used, and it was common for all of us to ride together in the hotel's shuttle van.  They were pretty nice group of guys.

  3. Yes, Federal Law prohibits that the train crew works more then 12 hours at a shot. They are extremely strict about this too. They could be in the middle of nowhere(basically) and if it hits 12 hours they must stop and wait for a crew change. NS wont let there crew work for more then 10 hours at a shot. And UP is 12 hours. The other biggy is BNSF and they are iffy. For them it depends on where they are at. The CP an CN since they are both foreign, have different rules though. They can go as much as 18 hours with out a crew change, but if this happens they can not work for another 12 hours.

    Did i lose you yet???

When it comes to NS/UP/BNSF going to Canada, they need to follow the USA rules because they are based out of the USA. My area in the USA is a big area for crew changing for NS. This is kinda cool because us rail fans get to meet the conductors and engineers. and get pictures in the cab.

To answer your question: YES, the only thing they will not supply is extra money if the conductor or engineer wishes to smoke in the room, since most hotels charge extra for that. Also Food i THINK is extra.

Great site, with lots of info.

  4. Yup. The hotel accommodations are always provided by the company. When I was with BNSF, and we had to hold-over in a smaller town with out too many hotels, they always put us up in the best one in that area. I was assigned to a local in North Dakota for 5 months. The job required we stay in Jamestown for a 5 day work week. A few times my wife and child drove over from Minnesota to be there in the middle of the week. The company payed for an extra room. As long as you go where they want you to go, and do what they want you to do, they treat you pretty well. Not just with hotel rooms, but other things as well. I work for a short line RR now, but I'm still on BNSF tracks a couple times during the week. I still see my old Buds.
