We opened an account for each of the our kids when they were born.  My father put in a small lump sum, but even if he hadn't, we would have gotten the savings going, by putting in a little bit every week.  As the kids have started going to university, there's been enough in each of their accounts to pay for their first year.  A little bit of money- even $10/month, can go a long way in a high interest bearing account.  And as your baby gets older, he or she can also become involved in learning to save for things he or she wants, with a separate savings account.  Your good example will go a long way in helping your child learn about saving!  In today's world, where so many people live in debt, learning to manage money is a very important lesson.  God bless you!
