  1. freshman=1st yr

    sophomore=2nd yr

    junior=3rd

    senior=final [nd 4th]

    you cant say 12th grade or the term grade wen you're in college.

  2. A lot of people around here (N. Cali) ask, "What year are you?" Since you can't go by their age (if they told you) usually this way is acceptable. They still use fresh,sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student, too.

  3. I don't recommend using "what grade are you?". It sounds elementary. The other posters are right "what year are you?" is the correct way to ask the question.

  4. You can usually tell which ones are the freshman (first year) because they'll be the ones dressed all pretty and have the hair, piercings, makeup and outfits just so.  They try to fit their dress and attitudes into strange high-schoolish "cliques" or "classifications" or whatever.  Grunge, Emo, what-ever it happens to be called that year.  (this is both guys and girls)

    The upper class men (juniors and seniors) are easy to spot because they are in sweats and look like they just crawled out of bed and could care less who or what an Emo is.  College is about individual accomplishments and success, not about fitting into some weird categories.

    If given the choice, you want to hang with the upper class-men.  3/4 of the freshmen you meet your first year will have dropped out by the time you are sophomore and of those, (or whoever is left) another half of them will drop out before they graduate.  Be sure YOU aren't one of them.

  5. "what year are you?"
