  1. Its called air hammer, its caused by air getting into your hot water system, also you may have a build up of limescale in your pipes. Call a plumber and have him take a look.

  2. called air hammer

  3. The pipes at one or more stretches in the run are not securely fastened down.     When you open a tap, the opposite of a water-hammer occurs; the sudden drop in pressure allows water to accelerate suddenly, and that shakes the pipe.     It should also happen when you turn off the water suddenly.

The problem can be particularly loud if poorly supported pipes are run so closely together that they hit each other when they move.

Once the pipes are fastened down, if there is still a noise or clunking sound, you could put water-hammer arrestors at the ends of the branches that cause the noise.

  4. you can buy water hammer arrestors that will go right on your washer water outlets but i would try and drian the whole house first then refill like some one else answered

  5. Its called "water hammer"... its pretty common in older houses, but still happens in new houses.   Its caused when water is suddenly turned on or off and causes a shock wave of water to bang against the pipes.

Your home most likely has permanent air chambers that were installed into your plumbing.  These air chambers absorb the shock.  What happens over time however is the water absorbs the air in the air chambes and they completly fill with water and become no longer effective.

Fortunatly the fix for this is simple.  Drain all the water in your house.  You should have a drain somewhere that you can open that will allow all the water out of your lines.  Make sure you have a place for this water to go, such as a hose to the sump crock or several 5 gallon buckets.  You will want to turn on a few faucets to allow air back into the lines.

When you drain all the water out, air will once again fill the air chambers.  You can then simply turn your water back on and all will be well again.

If that dosen't work you should call a plumber, they can install devices that will absorb the waterhammer and fix the problem.
