Question:

Whenever we run our water there is a horrible smell of sulpher does anyone know what causes it?

The house is beginning to smell badly. We are in the UK. Any suggestions please

  1. "Hydrogen Sulphide" it comes from decomposing material found naturally in water underground, "Chlorination" gets rid of the odor (and is an antiseptic), it (Hydrogen sulphide) is harmless, always there. If you have a municipally supplied water "Water Dept." you can call and complain, if you get your water from a well, on the property you will need a filtration set up.


  2. My grandpa always blamed it on iron in the water.  Did they use iron pipes to carry your water?  Are you on a farm with a water pump?  Those a often made from iron.  Is the soil in your area really red?

  3. Sulfur...or more technically hydrogen sulphide

    I am guessing that you are using a well, and live in an area with  sedimentary rock; sulfur is often found in wells in such an area, particularly if there are seams of coal or small natural gass deposits nearby.

  4. Maybe you have some poisinous water ;] or you'r pipes are corroding...?
