avoid weekends, except sundays, late evening like 10 or 11pm, weekdays are good too, late morning, 10am, not right away shelves have not been fully stocked yet

Early in the morning on a weekday, after the shops have just opened.  You will get better service, and the staff will be nicer to you.

Tip: Be nice to the shop assistants.  It pays off.  I am a shop assitant, and I'm telling you now, rude people don't get anything.

I have a complex strategy for this.  You asked the right guy.

1. First off, buy a whold bunch of stuff a week after xmas and rake in on big sales.  Hide the rest in the garage until next year.  Or if you are shippiing to someone out of state, just buy it late and ship it off, and tell them it was on back order.  

2. Online stuff like Amazon is great.  Pick the present, have it giftwrapped and mailed directly to the recipient, all with 5 clicks of a mouse.

3. If you gotta hit the mall go in as early as they open on a week day, even if you gotta call in sick.
