Hi guys. I'm hoping to surprise my boyfriend with a short (4-ish days) break in Europe in January but I need ideas for where. We're both students, so I'm trying to find somewhere fairly cheap, maybe book tickets from ryanair or easyjet. He studies architecture so I'd like somewhere he'd find interesting, but also somewhere fairly romantic. I'm a bit clueless and looking for inspiration, hope you can help!

  1. Munich has some great architecture (modern and old) and can be reached by Easy Jet from the UK.

Oh I forgot to say it is also a very beautiful and romantic city.

  2. have you considered some of the Greek Islands, i no its not exactly Europe but they do have some very impressive structures many built directly into cliff sides, worth thinking about

  3. My husband is an architect...and actually he finds everywhere interesting.

There was an architecture exhibition recently when we went to Australia (he is Japanese) which was fascinating for him to see local architecture.

There is also a place in southern Italy which has these unique round houses where i know he would like to go....and I know he would like to go to the greek islands

He LOVED Barcelona......the cathedral and all the Gaudi structures

  4. greece or rome, but failing that the alhambra palace in southern spain (granada), if you go there are lots of cheap flights to malaga which is the nearest airport, some airlines now fly to granada too

  5. Southern europe!!

    More specifically:

1 Greece! they have tons of architectural buildings- thats where architecture was born- you could go anywhere in the country and your pretty much guaranteed architecture- go to the acropolis -the islands have tons of structures- naxos- santorinini, plus its romantic too and has great beaches- 2 of the seven wonders of the world are located here-another 3 that they build are abroad- its also quite cheap other than athens- for architecture, history, culture, beaches and party islands (Mykonos!), greece is far ahead of the pack.

2 Western turkey or Cyprus both have many ancient greek buildings including 2 of the 7 wonders of the world, and the ancient city of troy and constantinople

3 Italy has lots of architecture, they build it all with help from their neighboors (greece) - rome has great sights- venice, and so many more!

3 Old Nice in southern france has great architecture ,aswell as the whole surrounding area.although its more expensive.

4 barcelona and madrid, the only ones i list without having been there, i hear it has great sights too and i would like to go- you should look into it,

5 Czech republic- prague has many many sights i spend 3 months there its great. has many old buildings, churches, clocks, squares, city centers, wich is full of pubs and eateries, and cukrarnas (literaly meaning 'sugar house'). the best dessert there thuoght would have to be pribinacek you can find it in any grocery store, its addictive.

  6. Bordeaux has a mix of very old and new buildings.A new business area has been built in modern style. The football stadium, Stade Chabon Delmas is an interesting design, concrete and curves. The engineer Eiffel built bridges here before his tower in Paris.

Old warehouses on the Garronne river have been converted to shops and restaurants.

A fantastic feature is the Water Mirror opposite the Bourse. It is spectacular, and the public interact with it using it to cool down in the Summer heat. It reflects the magnificent buildings opposite. A mist is produced by it too a few times an hour. The Memorial to the Girondins is so amazing, I can not help returning to it every day, and have hundreds of photos of it.

Bordeaux has become a wonderful city, thanks to the architects of the past and present.

It is quite cheap to fly there, or get there by Eurostar.

Go, I promise you will not be sorry.

  7. I’d think somewhere in Italy would be a good place to start looking.  My brother’s a new architecture student, and I believe they’re supposed to have a trip there eventually as part of the program.

  8. I found Leipzig really interesting when I was there a number of years back. I just hope they haven't cleared alot of the old buildings i thought were beautiful in the name of redevelopment. You couldn't go wrong in Berlin either.
