  1. On the front, over the boardwalk, there's some great fish restaurants,  there's 1 there called Chico's or Charlies, its got two floors with lots of glass.

They do a great seafood platter.

  2. Paella.  Chicken Paella with a 2 pint glass of beer.  Delicious!

  3. There is an excellent restaurant named Colibri's in Barcelona. It came to me as a recommendation and from start to end was one memorable meal.

They had a Venezuelan rum at the bar and I was staying with a Venezuelan who loved that particular brand. The owner of Colibri's sold me a whole bottle for $15 (US). That's cheaper than I can get it in the States!

  4. My favourite place in Barcelona is called Origens 99.9% it's quite near the picasso museum.

99.9% of the food in there is catalonian and you get a magazine style menu to help you choose. The food was delicious!

There is a good tapas bar near the museum too, called El Xampanyet, which was heaving with locals in the evening.

  5. Tapas - fresh marinated olives and spanish omelette, yum! Make sure you try the crema catalana (may have spelt that wrong) - a creme brulee made with the local Barcelona liquor, it's really yummy. Alternatively you can also buy the liquor from local supermarkets, quite cheap and very tasty - like lemon Baileys only nice (admittedly that sounds gross but it tastes lush)

  6. El Raco con Fabes is just outside Barcelona and it is the restaurant owned by internationally acclaimed chef Santi Santamaria.  One of the best meals I've had in my life and I love gourmet food from all parts of the world and eat it as often as I can.

There is also a wonderful restaurant in Barcelona, just near or on Las Ramblas, called Octavia or Oct.....  It too was lovely.   I still have its business card but I just can't find it at the moment.

As a last resort, I have found that the best way to learn where the best local food is served is to ask the local population.  Your hotel staff will be able to tell you where other excellent finds are located.

PS - Although  I am sure you can find good paella in Barcelona, paella is truly a Valencia dish, so go to Valencia to eat it.  For excellent Catalan food I suggest the fresh anchovies (NO salt because they are fresh NOT canned) lightly sauteed in garlic and olive oil.  Did you know the Spanish produce more olive oil  than the Italians (Spain just does a poor job of exporting).  Also, if you can try some good Spanish jamon (ham) go for it, expecially if you can get black pig version.  I find a true Spanish jamon far superior to prosciutto as it is less salty and more smooth (but you do need to be sure you are being served a good quality).

  7. A Restaurant !!!

  8. Look for a busy one full of locals.  This is always a good sign.

It is the same for tapas bars.  Look on the floor and if there are lots of cig butts, then it´s a good one.

  9. 4gats really nice a tad expensive [4gats.com]
