  1. Short answer:  Best places are the ones people don't talk  about.

Long answer:   All depends on what you are looking for and how much time you have.  Personally, I avoid hyped-up government-built tourist spots.  Expensive, diluted, overcrowded, Americanized.

But that's what many people are looking for in a vacation, they  seem to want a party on the beach while enjoying isolation from Mexican culture, except for sanitized packaged versions of stereotypes.

So, if you are typical TOURIST with just a little time, then yes, the Mayan Riviera is beautiful for snorkeling, scuba and parties.  If you want to try the less crowded version, then consider the newest Fonatur resort: Huatulco, in Oaxaca.  There are others that Fonatur (gov development agency) manages and they are all top notch resort areas.

BUT if you are travelers, people who like to get to know a place, the people, make contact, try new things, enrich their experiences, then I can recommend books instead of places (Don't want "my" spot to be overrun!):

For best general orientation to long-term traveling and excellent entertanment: "People's Guide to Mexico"

For current tips and detailed info on areas and towns in Mexico:  Lonely Planet - Mexico

Have fun and at the very least, learn to enjoy good tequila, not "shoot" it.

  2. The Mayan Riviera by far.  There, you are twenty minutes to Cancun if you so desire.  Playa Del Carmen is such a great little tourist town and Cozumel (2nd best snorkeling in the world next to the Great Barrier Reef) is a 20 minute ferry ride from Playa

  3. Playa Del Carmen (and surrounding area) ... you could choose to go the All Inclusive route or stay at one of the many locally run hotels and inn's in the area.

I was there 2 years ago and stayed at the Barcelo Tropical.  It was awesome.

  4. Cancun. . .then you could take a cruise to Costa Maya. . .
