I'm looking to go to Ireland maybe for about 5 days sometime soon and I've always wanted to visit old castle ruins, but not the ones with structured tours and all that. Just to lose myself in the beauty of it, you know? Not other tourists around and whatnot. So... yea. I'm rambling now, so I'll stop. But if you have any suggestions, please leave a reply!

I'm also going to London (4 days) and Paris (5 days). So if you have any suggestions about either of those, please reply as well!!! :)

  1. Athenry in County galway

    Trim in county meath.

Tor ballylee near gort in county galway, this castle was once owned by W.B.Yeats.

    Roscommon castle.

Granuaile , the pirate queens castle in clew bay in county mayo

There are many old castles in ireland but the ones that are not tourist traps are on privately owned land and these are also dangerous. It would be advisable to stay away from these as they are in a bad state of repair and you would not learn much from them.

  2. Dunluce on the north coast or Carrickfergus castles are not too touristy.

  3. Unfortunately the tourist traps are so for a reason, they are not necessarily the ones with the most interesting past but they are the ones in the best condition and with the most left standing. A lot of the other castles are reduced to little more than a tower that's in the process of collapsing.

  4. I'd say slain castle in county mirth Ireland. although I have never been to Ireland. this castle looks beautiful from when the music group Celtic Woman did a concert there.

  5. Wales

  6. drimnagh castle..

  7. http://irelandnow.com/ruins.html <--- This one looks best.
