Question:

Where's the best place to dig for fossils in Montana (legally on your own)?

I'm currently visiting family in Great Falls, MT (we're from PA). My little brother is really into dinosaurs. We were told that it was fairly easy to find fossils on your own here in the soil. But it is illegal to dig inside any State Parks, only public places are allowed. It seems like everywhere we go, it's either fenced in or very difficult to get to. Besides that, how can we tell what's "public" and what's not? Any ideas from anyone else out there whose ever tried it would be much appreciated. Thanks!

  1. you can not do this. all land is owned by someone. either a person or the government. either way if you take something from private land you are stealing. and it is illegal to take things from 'public' land. sometimes the gov. will sell licenses to take mushrooms or berries or something.
