Where's the best place to see the northern lights in scotland?

a lot of people say oh head north but i was wondering if anyone new of particular towns or areas which are good and also what months to go?

  1. It is said that the northern lights can be seen frequently in Scotland. I live 35 miles north of Aberdeen and have seen this phenomena 3 times. In 2003 and 2004. They occur when the sun is having some sort of Spots activity.

    It is reckoned that the next period of intense activity will be in 2011 / 2012.

    There is a web site "Aurora Watch" and they give updates of sunspot / aurora activity.

    Auroras have been seen as far south as Preston, England!
