  1. im a local from newy...... you can sometimes in winter see snow in the barrington tops

your best bet would be to contact a local infomayion center...

the next closest place were it snows would be in the blue mountains...... again it doesnt always snow there!!

  2. I know it has snowed in Newcastle before in 1985 I think it was.

The closest place would be the Blue Mountains, it may snow but its not a snow field so no skiing or snowboarding.

The closest gauranteed snow is down at Perisher Blue. You travel down past Canberra and Cooma. There are lots of buses that always do trips to the snow.

  3. It does snow at Barrington Tops sometimes.  It has also snowed a little on the top of the Watagan Mountains, north west of Morisset.  But I dont think it happens all that often.

  4. Unfortunately Newy is not close enough to the snowfields, unless as Semi pointed out they get freak falls in the Blue Mountains or Barrington Tops area. The closest Fields are Perisher Blue, Selwyn and Thredbo which are a 2.5hr drive from Canberra which is a 4.5hr drive from Newy. So a Day trip would be out of the question.

I am a skier and did a stint in Canberra before moving back home to Newcastle trading the skifields for the beach. A good trade where summer is concerned but I miss skiing badly.

  5. Closest place would be Mt kosciusko.  August is getting close to spring and it's probably the best bet to see snow there.   It's over 7 hours drive south from Newcastle.  It's a long way to drive if you are just staying 3 days.

The Blue Mountains hardly get any snow even during the coldest winter months, any snowfall there is a newsworthy event.  We often visit there during winter and have yet to see any snow.

It did snow this week in a place called Oberon, it's 3 hours drive inland from Newcastle but it has to be really cold for that to happen and it made the news.

  6. Mt. Buller VIC

  7. Try this website. It gives approx travelling time to guaranteed snow. It also gives you the contact details of a few bus/shuttle companies.

While I realise that you have stated that it doesnt need to be a snow field, due to the unreliability of Australian weather, the only snow that we can guarantee, to eliminate wasting your time, would be the actual snowfields.

Also, if you are staying at paid accomodation you will find that if you call them they will usually be able to book tours for you which ensures that you are picked up from the door and brought back later in the evening.

If you look at the site Jindabyne and Perisher Blue are the closest.

You may be lucky, apparently there was snow in the Hunter Valley, just near Newcastle last June. It is purely luck though.
