  1. "... a sniper rifle is a rifle used to ensure accurate placement of bullets at longer ranges than small arms k all you Geniuses."

Just what do you call a .22 if not a 'small arm'?

    Not exactly a crew-served weapon.

A true sniper will have a weapon of sufficient caliber to do the job at the required distance...it's the rifleman, not the rifle.

  2. You are correct but what everyone is saying here is that the rifle will not do this on it's own. It is a two part deal here. In this case you just want a .22 rifle. Can you achieve the level of a sniper? You sure can. But what a lot of people here do not understand because of their own lack of experience, is that being a military sniper is only 10% Marksmanship. Being a rogue sniper hanging out on the top of some high rise building is 100% Marksmanship. You need not be concerned with stalking and stealth. Most people can be taught to consistently shoot a hi-power rifle with a $2500 mil-dot scope on it. Practice is the key here. Understanding your weapon and how it works. The scope itself will take a few weeks to learn on your own. But once you get it is cake. To hit a Pumpkin from 500meters you need not be versed in stealth and stalking. You don't have to stay awake for a few days and be deprived of water and food to shoot a pumpkin. You just drive your happy behind down the range, put the pumpkin down range and come back and set up your weapon. Destroy the pumpkin utilizing the fundamentals of marksmanship. If you want to make it interesting or for a extra challenge, go get yourself a Mil-Dot Master so you can do range estimation or just use the formulas and plug them into your calculator so you can do it manually. One of the first things they will tell you in Scout Sniper School is that almost everything you will learn there is a perishable skill. If you don't use it you will lose it. Now I could go on and on and on here about this.....

As for a good entry level .22 caliber Bolt action rifle.. Try a Savage Model 12FV in .223. You can either get it in the tactical 21" or a 26" barrel. It has no sights and the "V" in FV stands for Heavy Barrel. Check out savagearms.com for the details. I have always been a Remington guy but since I used one of these what a steal for the price. A .223R will get you out up to 400-500meters for the purposes of punching holes in paper. This rifle will be fine for that. It even has the Accutrigger which is a pretty nice feature. It is adjustable from 1.5 to 6.5 LBS. There is no creep in it whatsoever. I beleive it comes out of the box with 2.5lbs of pull and that just happens to be my personal preferance. Good luck and happy training.

  3. There is no such thing as a sniper rifle.  In the hands of a trained sniper, an open sighted .22 single-shot is a sniper's rifle.

In the hands of a novice, a Barrett semi-automatic rifle with the best scope in the world is nothing but an expensive toy.

If you want a good accurate .22 Bolt-action rifle, and that is a good choice BTW, Winchester, Remington, Savage, and Marlin all make (or have made) good quality bolt-action .22's.  Simply buy the one that fits your budget, and arm length, and top it with a good quality scope, after you've learned to shoot with the iron sights.

Scroll down to tha bolt actions for some ideas. Just note that ammo selection is just as important as the brand name on the rifle.

And keep in mind that the smaller the bullet, the harder it is going to be accurate at longer ranges.

Do some research first before asking here next time. Unless you welcome advice from the usual ignorant, misinformed or blind followers of hersey or "my brother's girlfriend's father was a Navy SEAL/SWAT Sniper/ Secret Service and CIA agent said ________".

The above is an accurate out of the box .22 rifle.

As far as sniping,  smaller calibers such as .223 and .17 loose all there knock down power and are not used as a sniper weapon per say. the Small calibers are too adversely effected by wind, rain or other atmospheric conditions.

  6. lol  i don't think u have any idea of what u are talking about like the guy above me said there is no such thing as a .22 sniper rifle or even a .22 bolt action the bullets are way to small for bolt action they are usually in a clip

  7. Probably wal mart. You can also buy a high-power scope there.

  8. Do you possibly mean Target Rifle?  You can get bolt action 22s from several manufacturers (Browning, CZ, Marlin, Mossberg, Remington, Ruger, Savage, etc) BUT they are all 3X the price of a semi automatic or lever action.  Also, the effective accurate range of a 22 long rifle is about 50-75 yards and that is with no wind.

You can get a very accurate plinker in the Ruger 10/22 that you can also pimp out to your heart's delight or you can get a Lever Action Marlin 39-A that will shoot dimes at 50 yards.

If you want accuracy at distance, you need to step up to the .223 or higher.  Savage makes a really good bolt action in .223 that would be quite well out to a few hundred yards and still be able to find (relatively) cheaper ammo for; just remember, for quality shooting you need quality ammo.  If you just wanna plink around, cheaper is fine.

  9. The standard M-16 round was designed as a high power varmint rifle bolt action. I think you can still get some good Remington 700 in .223 for around $600. Check their web site. If your good 2000 yd shot is possible.

  10. speaking as someone who's been shot in the calf by a .22, they're not what you're looking for in the "sniping" aspect.

Since no one else addressed your actual question that thoroughly, i'd recommend somewhere like walmart for your first one, you can pick up good starters for around 200, some with scope already mounted.

When you want to move up, a good rifle for accuracy is a 243 or .308.  Remington has a large line of "cost effective" rifles in both those calibers.  I recommend the 770 series, while not the highest in quality, the price to quality ratio is rather good.  Also when you go out to choose a scope i recommend a Bushnell or Leupold.  for range of 25-200 yards i'd recommend a 3X9, 200-500 4X12 and 500 on, a 20X or higher.

  11. METROPOL is right on target if you are shooting  big game (or humans).

If you want a gun for shooting small to medium grade, try a Savage .177 HMR with a floating Bull or Fluted Barrel.

Much more accurate and outdistances a .22 by 120 yards.

Both rounds are extremely accurate but alway remember...Shot placement is 9/10ths of the game.

I can take down a Deer at 300 yards with either round but if you are going for long distance the .308 is still good at 700 yards. It is the preferred round for SWAT Snipers and many Military Snipers.

  12. A sniper rifle is only a sniper rifle when it has a trained sniper using it.  Otherwise it is either just a rifle or a match rifle.

US snipers do not use 22 cal bolt action - they used to use the Atchionsion 22 cal conversion in a M16A4 rifle with a suppressor .  Now they use heavy 100gr 5.56mm with a suppressor when they need a low power, low noise solution.

22 rifles range in price from the small trainer Chipmonk rifle to the high end rifles used by the Olympic Shooting team - but - a $4800 match rifle does you no good unless you have the skills, training and experience to use it.

    Hope this helps

  13. Tell you what, kid. I have a .22 with which I've "sniped" several squirrels and turtles. Send me $10,000 and it's yours, and I won't tell the government you have it.

  14. There is no such thing as a .22 sniper rifle.......  Hand a Remington 700 rifle chambered in .308 to a sniper and it becomes a "snipers rifle".... Hand the same rifle to a hunter and its a "hunting rifle"..... Then hand it over to a target shooter and it becomes a "target rifle"....

.22 rifles are never used by military or police snipers....  Even if a sniper handed you his rifle - in your hands its not a "snipers rifle"

  15. ruger has the 22wmr. the ruger 77/22. pretty sure aftermarket parts are available to make it into a sniper style look.
