  1. If it's in North America, you won't find much in the way of death certificates. We weren't good about keeping death records back then. But you can go to the Register of Deeds office in your county and trace the ownership of the land. That will give you real names to work with and something concrete that you can trace with wills, military and census records. Then you can snoop for marriage records and local histories on the pioneer families in your area. You may be surprised at how much help your local historical society is once you get that land record.

  3. I looked on the census of 1850 and Anthony Jacobus lived in Greece, New York (Monroe County) which doesn't appear to be too far from Rochester.  He was married and his wife's name was Margaret.

If I were you I'd go to the local Historical Society and find out who lived on your property in the 1850's and what connection they had with Anthony Jacobus.  The Historical Society in Monroe County might also be able to give you some information on his descendants.

  4. Lisa.. we have tons of sources that can help, and a variety of persons.

Please, you can edit your question  include the name of the person and the county (town).  Everything we say, will depend on this.. there are different sources for US or UK, so we need a location. Each state and county will also be different.

    edit-

I see you are on genforum already.. good for you.  So far I see, several Anthonys.. but you are on the right track.

However, you still may want to be CERTAIN that you don't live on what what his original land.. in which case, the stone may well belong right where it is.. his grave may be on the property.

PLEASE keep us up to date !!

  5. Fascinating!  Please take a photo of it and post it on findagrave.com, someone in that family is surely looking for his final resting place!

I believe I found him, as I verified Rochester is in Monroe County:

  6. You can consult your county or state vital and/or church records office to see if there is any record of this person.  You might have to pay for it.  Death certificates usually have a signature from the next-of-kin, which will give a starting point for you to look for family.

The Latter-Day Saints have an extensive database that is free to search: http://www.familysearch.org

There you might be able to find records of the deceased as well.
