Where Do Board Games Stand In The World Of Sports?
In today’s world, the significance of sports cannot be denied. With every passing day, we witness numerous sports events being held at different places around the world. Millions of fans gather in the stadiums by expending a huge amount of money to enjoy the ambience of a competitive match.
Rival teams battle hard and try to outlive their opponents, making history with their moves and skills. Together, the fans, media, critics and the players make each sport event larger than life. Considering the grandeur of sports and the unequalled fame that it welcomes, it will not be wrong to say that sports have become one of the most notable parts of our lives.
There are certain sports that are more popular than others though. They have higher rewards, stronger fanbases and receive endless media attention. However, this does not mean that one particular sport is more important than the other. In fact, every sport is unique in its own way. There are distinct moves, techniques, rules and even varied playing grounds for each sport.
Maybe this is one of the reasons why people never get bored of the world of sports, because each sport has something different to offer to its spectators. The dazzling venues, skilful players and unique weather conditions; each sport activity offers something special to its guests.
But the fact that certain games are highlighted more than others cannot be ignored. The reasons behind this include, but are not limited to, the fact that specific games involve more thrill and action, or they originate in a particular country and holds patriotic value.
However, recent years have been witness to the involvement of controversies in sports, which become the talk of the town. Be it a golf player having extra marital affair or a footballer sleeping with a young girl, the media makes sure to cash in whatever news they can bring to the public. Here, it would not be wrong to say that the press and media play a vital role in making a certain sport huge among its fans. They make a seemingly plain event become “extravagant” with their enormous lenses capturing amazing footage, their catchy punch lines and colourful adverts.
With so much action going on, it certainly becomes hard for one to decide which sports to follow and which to not. Although personal preferences play a key role; an individual loving energy, action and thrill would appreciate almost every other sport. This matter essentially raises the questions of, where do board games stand in the world of action sports? Are they a significant part of the sporting community or mere activities that do not require proper skills and trainings? Or have board games made it as big as action sports?
Although board games require more usage of the mind than physicality, they have certainly come a long way. Despite their limited audiences, and lower media attention, keen fans follow them everywhere. Of all the board games, chess is extremely popular. Although the game was invented in India, it has taken over the western world and is loved by thousands of people. The game revolves around two players, who try to take over the “king” of the opponent within the army. Chess involves intense moves and is basically all about techniques and strategies.
Other board games include backgammon, checkers and monopoly. There are a few games that involve a certain level of physical skill, while others rotate around techniques, moves and playing strategies. Generally board games involve two or more players with eliminations rounds. Usually, the player who survives all the eliminations is declared the winner. However, there are certain board games that can be played to the end without any elimination. These types of games are especially suited for mixed play between children and adults.
Despite the limited scope of board games, they would surely make it huge in years to come. Each game has its peculiarity, this includes those of board games, thus essentially, one day or another, people will become captivated by the charm of board games as well. Just like our body needs physical movement, our gray cells need to stay active and strategically thinking.
