Where Is the best place in Germany for shopping?

Question

I am going to Germany in December with a friend, and was wondering which city would be the best to stay in. WIll be doing a lot of Shopping (clothes etc...)

I was thinking of Franfurt or Munich, Preferably not Berlin...

I wouldn't like to disappoint you, but as to clothing, Germany is neither cheap, nor will you get something unusual. Most stores sell the same brands you're already familiar with. If you come to Munich, maybe the word "Trachtenmode" will help you for further research. I'm Bavarian, and there are really nice things available that don't look like the typical "Dirndl" or Bavarian "Lederhose"; but you should count 200 or 300 euros in for something decent. But those things are usually made of linnen or hemp instead of cotton, and they're worth the money. I own two shirts which don't look like traditional clothing, and they seem indestructible.

If you come in December, you should always ask for a "Kunsthandwerkermarkt" (artisans' market), no matter in which city you are. They're sometimes a bit off-path, as the tourist areas are reserved for big business christmas markets, but the locals (especially the younger ones) will know. You can buy beautiful things there, and prices are negotiable. Maybe you'll buy things you don't really need, but they often have performances there, too, like a blacksmith making a candle holder on an anvil. (And, yes, it was me who bought one of those. I don't even use candles, but it looks nice.) And the food there is usually much better than on the main markets. I would be surprised if you survive Germany in December without gaining at least two kilos on weight.

Oh, btw: Don't trust the Glühwein ("hot wine"). It's sweet, it's delicious, but it's strong. People who sell it usually have a VERY broad smile on their face; that's from tasting. Just have two cups, and your smile will be as broad as theirs.

I personally like also the Duesseldorf area because of the fashion house and all the clothing companies in the area. My favorite would be Esprit.

If you are going in December you'll want to visit the Christmas markets. Nuremberg and Dresden have nice Christmas markets. I also liked the one in Salzburg, because they had a lot of unusual handcrafted stuff on sale there. (The Kunsthandwerk Alwin mentioned.) Salzburg is technically in Austria, but it is so close to the German border it is practically part of Germany too. Salzburg and Nuremberg can easily reached by train from Munich, so this would be a good base.

However, if you want really cool and fashionable clothes from small boutiques you must go to Berlin. There is no other way and no other place for it. I admit that Düsseldorf ist also known as a fashion center, but the hip things (the kind of stuff the Hollywood stars come to Germany for) are sold in Berlin.

Why the h**l not Berlin?! It's the capital and there's

Well, anyway, I happen to think it's the best city on

Earth, maybe cos I live here since like 14 years (all

my life).

Anyway. So, not Berlin. Well well. Frankfurt is more of

a banking city than a shopping city, whereas Munich

(and Berlin!!!) is, but (compeared to Berlin...) Munich

is pretty expensive. The hotels and all... But then, they

have stuff like Gucci, if that's what you want.

I suggest DUESSELDORF. Duesseldorf is also called "Little Paris"...lots of fashion...lots of fashion compnies are located here and their outlet stores too. Check it out

Dusseldorf and Munich are very expensive. Good shopping places are also Hamburg, Frankfurt/M., Berlin, Nuremberg, Stuttgart.

Düsseldorf or Hamburg are fabulous for shopping.

Düsseldorf is the fashion capital of Germany and Hamburg probably is a bit cheaper and had its own style to it.

Anyways, if you want to go luxury shopping always look for a Street named Kö. Thats where you find Luis Vuitton...ect.

Metzingen, a few kilomters south of stuttgart. hundrets of outlet stores. avoid saturdays.

What ever you want what ever you like --- you wil get it in Hamburg. Hamburg is number one in city tourism in Germany followed by Munich and on place 3 Berlin.
