Where Should A Second Grader's Reading Be At??

im tutoring a second grader that is behind on her reading. i was wondering what should she know how to do, so that we can set goals, and so that i can see what she needs to learn

  1. If you google Lexile Levels there are several websites available. Are you a teacher? If so, I would speak to some of your collegues regarding expectations for 2nd grade regarding reading. If you are not, then you can still get lots of info on the internet as well as perhaps schedule a conference with her teacher. When I tutored, I always planned a conference with the teacher so I could get a direct explanation of the child's issues as well as find out what sort of curriculum was being used, etc... As for specific tips, I know that having her read the same book/page more than once will build speed and fluency. Also, ask her lots of questions regarding the content of the story- who are the characters, the setting, the problem, etc... I hope this helps.


  2. Get your state standards for reading to find out what they will be taught in 2nd grade. Use that as your guide.
