Me and my fiance want to build a nice home in florida but we do not want to be in an area where we would be heavily hit by hurricane or any other natural disasters. We want to live in a nice neighborhood and we are looking to pay no more than $550,000 in a house. We want high ceilings and to also build a guest home. Where would be a good city in florida to do so without being too exposed to danger or natural hurricanes? What are the advantages of the cities that were mentioned? What are the fun and cool things to do while living in the cities in mentioned?

  2. Tallahassee.  For considerably less than $550,000 you can buy or build a very nice house.  We are 20 miles inland from the coast so hurricanes hitting us is a rare event.  It's a college town and the State capitol so there is an interesting mix of people and many cultural opportunities.

  3. Of course, you'll have a very good chance of being hit by a hurricane even if you live in central Florida.  And, you won't  build a house like that in Florida for $550,000.... try $1,550,000.

  4. Go north.. anything middle or south is going to get slammed.. including the panhandle.. personally I would never build in Florida the amount of homeowners insurance that you willhave to pay will not be cost effective.. I would check into that first and build in Georgia.. its close by and less vulnerable.

  5. No hurricanes?

    How bout missouri?

Hurricanes are as Florida as oranges and sport fishing. Just goes with the territory.

  6. Gainesville and surrounding areas like Alachua, High Springs, Newberry.  There is a lot of land to build on for relatively cheap and it is in the center of the state.  Gainesville is a small city of around 250,000 and it has the University of Florida in it.  Not that bad of traffic, cost of living is decent, job opportunities are decent and the economy is pretty good.  A lot of cultural activities at UF and downtown Gainesville but you are also able to get away from all the crowds into the country pretty easily.  It is a good place to raise a family with low crime rate and good schools.

Email me if you need some recommendations of good builders.

  7. Jacksonville isn't bad but sometimes that city smells terrible.  I would suggest a two week driving vacation to decide.  Hurricanes are a threat and are serious but ones that wipe out cities, like the Homestead one, are few and far between.  You might consider South Florida so you get the Miami city life, perhaps outside of Tampa as another location.

Just drive around but don't bother with the Pan Handle - nothing but Gators and Seminoles.  Total garbage.

  8. Orlando.  do the research
