Where a teen could submit writing?

Not to be conceited, but I'm a pretty good writer. I write personal essays, opinion essays, and poems. The thing is, I'm not sure how to get my works out there. Any advice or places I could submit to?

  1. If you're looking to publish in the real world-for profit, I mean. I'd buy a copy of The Writer's Handbook. I hear it's extremely helpful. If you just want people to read what you've written I'd suggest fanfiction.net for any fanfiction you may have written and fictionpress.com or papertank.com for any original works. Fictionpress has a larger viewing audience but that also means your story is likely to be lost in the midst of the tens of thousands of other stories in the category. papertank is fairly new and thus your story is likely to be viewed very quickly, and if it's good, it'll attract a lot of attention quicker.

    Hope that helped

  2. Try pitching a story or an idea for a story to the editor of a local magazine or newspaper. Really, start small and build a portfolio. Join a writer's group and get some peer reviews. There are tons of periodicals that publish essays and poems...go to your library and get a copy of The Writer's Handbook 2008...its an encyclopedia of publications and lists what they take and what the procedure is for submitting work. Good luck.

  3. See if your school has any literary magazines, and submit some of your work. It'll let people know that you're interested in writing, and maybe your teachers will give you some ideas as to where you can submit your writing.

Also, try submitting a few pieces to the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards (http://www.artandwriting.org). I'm only familiar with the art portion of the competition, so I can't give you much advice for the writing awards, but each school or county is supposedly allotted a certain number of submission spots. You should ask your English teacher about whether she can sponsor you.

  4. I definitely agree with Emma- Fanfiction.net is a GREAT place to get your writing out there. Or, if your work is original you could try FictionPress.com. They're both free and you can get really good critiques and feedback from fellow writers.

If you are a teen- do NOT get suckered into one of those websites that promises to publish your work in a 'teen anthology'- so many of these places don't give you ANY compensation, because it's for teens, and they expect you to be just dying to get published even if it's for no pay.

Teen or no teen, if your work is good and you want to get published, you deserve to be properly compensated, like a real author. Don't let anyone take advantage of you.

    Good luck! :)

  5. Before you go somewhere big (like a newspaper), try FictionPress. Alot of teens read and write there. There's a huge poem section and there's an essay category.

  6. Writerscafe.org totally blows crufty sites like writing.com and fanfiction.com out of the water, plus the community is very oriented towards helping new writers, rather than shunning them at other places.

  7. Fanfiction.net is the best place to submit writing!

  8. http://allpoetry.com is a free site to get your work critiqued and such, they also have a portion for short stories and such so don't be put off by the poetry part. Maybe you could start on there to get others opinions and get some following if you're good enough.

  9. There's a book called the Writer's Guide that comes out every year I think. Anyway, it's really thick and chuck full of places to send your writing with info on what these publications are looking for and what percentage of free lance writing they will accept. Also, try your local paper.

  10. www.writing.com

This is where I started and it's good!

  11. well, i know there are people who write essays for others for colleges or high school you know. like somebody homework and they get payed pretty will, i belvie argae slalary is about 35$-50$ essays but you must write them guranteed as an A. That is a good way to find out if your essays are as good as you think they are.

  12. http://www.chapteread.com is an awesome writing site. It's definitely worth checking out! Hope to see some of your posting there.

  13. Great for you writing is a gift. For the poetry go to www.poetry.com and submit a poem there and it can end up in a book of poetry I know cause I have poetry in a book. For the essays well there are always contests you can enter and also use google to self publish my friend did that now she has her book out there and selling. good luck!!!
