Where and how is it best to advertise in a local paper?

Question

I have the chane to advertise in a paper that has around 40 pages. I can't use the front page as that's already taken but i can choose anywhere else incuding the back page. Is the back as good as the front? Where's best to advertise in a paper or is any page as good as any other? Is any size/shape of advert better or is biggest best? Some advice from advertising experts would be appreciated :-D

The back page isnt as good as the front but is 2nd best although if you can only have a tiny ad on the back or front i wouldnt advise it, page 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 are next or going from the back, open the page and use the left hand page!

Although it just depends on the ad and what your looking for! For instance if you were advertising a single job vacancy then it wouldnt be worth the money to take a quarter page ad out in a paper thats read by millions

It also depends what you mean by a local paper. ie is it read by a few hundred, thousands or a few million people!

A quarter page ad in a uk paper thats read by a few million people would cost around £4000-£7000

I've worked in HR Management and also in advertising for the biggest soft drinks company in the world

Big is always best! Most expensive is best! it pays to advertise in in the most expensive places as theyre normaly the most seen!

I should also ad that I failed in these positions lol mostly because it bored me though!

The problem with ads in the paper is that you don't know who is going to see it and those who do see it wont all be interested. Word of mouth is the best way to get advertisement and the second best is specific search engine ranking keywords. back page is a must especially if your ad is aimed at men as most men Start with the back page when reading a newspaper,but it really does make a difference depending upon the service or product your promoting

It depends what you are advertising.  Simpler ads are always  better and get more attention.  If you are placing an ad in the classifieds I recommend starting the ad with the letter "A" to get placed on top of the list.  If you're placing a banner ad and have the option to use color then use it.  The back isn't as good as the front page but isn't a bad placement either.  Hope that helps-
