  1. At the moment the sun is between Solar maximums and activity is very low.  In order for you to see the aurora at lower latitudes, the sun has to be really active, usually in the middle of its 11 year cycle, which won’t be for another 5 years or so.

    Even then, it will take an enormous solar discharge for you to see the aurora in California – something that would cause a lot of problems with power grids and satellite communications.

    Your best bet is to save your money for a cruise to Alaska in about 5 or 6 years time (cost you about $2000), if you want to see the real thing.  Good luck.
