Well sara that was very helpful.  The "Hamptons" are located on Long Island, about 100miles south east of NYC.  They are comprised of several different communities; East Hampton, West Hampton, and Amagansett to name a few.  You are absolutely right, they are the home of the rich and famous during the summer season.  Each principality has its own character.  East Hampton is probably the most 'broadcast' because of its concentration of celebrities.  Without getting into to much detail my family  rented a house in Amagansett in the late sixties.  This was because "it was the place to be" because a growing tide of abstract expressionist painters who summered there.  Jackson Pollock killed himself  there in a car crash.

The beaches are beautiful and the mystique lived on.  Nowadays I'll bet celebrities who can afford it fly in.   Legendary are the traffic jams which  cause drivers to be on the road for four hours or more.  There is a convenient train on the Long Island Railroad which takes about 4 hours, but you are unlikely to find the rich and famous travelling that way.  The last time I was out there was about 10 yrs. ago, renting a time share.  Hope this helps, feel free to contact me.
