  1. They're usually taken to a beach in India where they're run aground.

    Then teams of labourers set about breaking them up.

    A  lot of asbestos was used on older ships so it's a job that will take many years of the workers  lives.

  5. mccormac has it right, except that most is done in Bangladesh...driven aground and then cut into pieces...by hand.. and taken away...by hand... to be recycled into rebar for buildings....see the book "Breaking Ships" for a description of real 3rd world poverty...
