Although it has been more than seven months since Barbaro was euthanized, owner Roy Jackson says that he and his wife, Gretchen, still receive plenty of letters and fan mail about the fallen champion.

But recently, Jackson says, more of the incoming mail has turned to an uplifting subject – Nicanor, the full brother to Barbaro, by Dynaformer. Now a yearling, Nicanor is only about a month away from being sent to Ocala, Fla., to be broken by John Stevens at his Thoroughbred horse farm in Marion County. Barbaro fans all around the country are anxious to know how little Nicanor is progressing.

“He’s doing fine,” Jackson said Sept. 7. “He’s still at Mill Ridge Farm in Lexington, Ky. I’ve only seen him four or five times, and it’s been about three months since I was last there. But I’ll get over to see him again while I’m at the (Keeneland September yearling) sale next week. “

Nicanor, out of the Carson City mare La Ville Rouge, was foaled at Mill Ridge on in March, 2006. Like Barbaro, the bay colt is named for one of the six foxhounds in a family heirloom painting that hangs in the Jacksons' West Grove, Pa. home.

Mill Ridge Stallion Marketing and Sales Development manager Bayne Welker Jr. sees Nicanor almost every day. He said the yearling has all the makings of a fine racehorse. “Nicaonor has developed nicely over the summer and is currently between 900 and 1,000 pounds. He has a good demeanor but has a competitive side when out with other colts," he said.

“Although his markings don't resemble Barbaro's, he is similar in color and stature. He currently comes up in the day out of the summer heat and is groomed and put out at night with other colts in his same age group. He should leave for Ocala around the first of October.”

After his time with Stevens, Jackson said Nicanor will be sent to trainer Michael Matz, who saddled Barbaro during his spectacular racing career. Barbaro won six of seven career races, including the 2006 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I).

If all goes well, Nicanor will begin his racing career in 2008, but no timetable has been set.

  1. I think this name should ring the starting Gate bell.:))

I Thank You for the heads up. I'm going to keep my eyes open for this one as well. I loved the champion Barbaro, and wish for the same things you do, only this time, I prey things work out better. I post on two other horse racing boards under a different namesake.

  2. What are you talking about and what is your question?  This is nothing more than a reprint.  Way too long to post here.

  3. don't show your lack of ignorance. Most horses that are bred have no chance to ever be successful let alone make it to a track. Every broodie that produces anything that looks like a grade 1 winner is automatically sent to either Storm Cat or AP Indy so they can sell the "half brother/sister to blah blah blah" at the Keeneland sale.

In This yearlings case, his sire is Dynaformer, who is a rock of constansty as far as horses goes. you won't find a more durable stallion that Dynaformer.

Odds are he won't matchwhat his brother did on the track... but the dam probably one of the 10 hottest dams in america with Better than Honor (Rags, Jazil),  Set them Free (Giacomo,  Tiago) Tossaud (sire of 5 grade 1 winners including chester house and empire maker, 2nd dam of hot 3YO first defence), Maggie Hawk (Unforgettable Max, Afleet Alex) and the others I don't recall off the top of my head at this present time.

remember, before Barbaro ever raced, he had a grade 2 winning half brother. The dam is one of the best in the business

if they were smart, I'd sell this one at an auction and fetch the millions he's worth. Regardless, you will hear from this horse in the future either on the track or at Stud. A full brother to Barbaro is worth SOMETHING.

  4. watch 1st race..might be a plug.....

  5. Hate to bust everyone's bubble here, but odds are, this horse won't even make a start, so don't get too excited just  yet.

  6. I appreciate the update. I hope things go well and Nicanor turns out to be a good racehorse. The other posters are right, though, there is no guarantee that full brothers of Barbaro will turn out to have Barbaro's racing ability. Genetics are a funny thing. We can hope, though, and keep our fingers crossed!

  7. They are in "KENTUCKY"!:)

  8. Thanks,I enjoyed that information. I too have wondered why there hasn't been much going on in this category.I check often and I have been disappointed. I was thrilled to have been at Saratoga when "Lawyer Ron" won the Woodward. It was my first time at Saratoga.  I hope "Nicanor" has a fabulous career.I loved "Barbaro".

  9. Don't let them dah your hopes and dreams.   Lets hope that  Nicanor has the same ability as Barbaro did.

    Thanks for the post.

Thank goodness the Saratoga meet is over, hopefully I'l do bet- tor at Belmont.

  10. Interesting! Nicanor hopefully will be just like his brother, Barbaro!

  11. I'm with Larry, don't get your hopes up yet.  He is still a yearling and so many things can go wrong between now and him actually starting in a race.

Don't forget that there are some 40,000 foals born and registered with the US Jockey Club EVERY YEAR - I don't see 40,000 two year olds making a debut each year do you.  At a guess I'd say about half of those foals never make it to the racetrack.

Just because they are full brothers does not guarantee that he will be anywhere near as good.  We've all seen full-siblings fail to reproduce the form shown by other family members.

Fingers crossed though that Nicanor will be one of the good ones - but don't expect too much, it is unfair for him to have to carry the burden of his brother's success.

Don't forget that there is a 3yo half-brother called Man in Havana who has yet to make it to the racetrack; and the eldest sibling Holy Ground was not exactly a world beater.

This is just my opinion though, you don't have to agree with me.
