  1. armadillos originate from central america and migrated up the southern coast of north america they can be found all over the south and im sure the mid United States , They burrow underground , when in rural areas they dig and live under porches sheds anything like that

  2. The only armadillo found in the USA is the nine banded armadillo.  They entered the USA across the Rio Grandee River in the 1850's.  Since then they have expanded in all direction across the USA.  As far north as Kansas and Missouri and as far east as South Carolina.

This site has a map of the known and potential areas that the armadillo live in.

One of the key ingredients to their continued expansion is the fire ant.

  3. mel says it best. but yeah, in the southern u.s.

  4. Many places one  time there was one in my sand box when I was a kid, my dad put moth balls in its hole. The Nine-banded Armadillo prefers to build burrows in moist soil near the creeks, streams, and arroyos near which it lives and feeds. The diet of different armadillo species varies, but consists mainly of insects, grubs, and other invertebrates. In the United States, the sole resident armadillo is the Nine-banded Armadillo (Dasypus novemcinctus), which is most common in the central southernmost states, particularly Texas. Their range is as far east as Florida and as far north as Kansas, and while cold winters have slowed the expansion of their range (due to a lack of sufficient body fat), they have been consistently expanding their range over the last century due to a lack of natural predators and have been found as far as western Kentucky, and are expected to eventually reach Ohio before the cold winters inhibit their expansion.
