I would like to go camping on some of the Islands off the coast of Queensland. I would like to go some where near/on the beach and be completly self sufficent. I know there is Fraiser and Stradbroke, are they too touristy? preferable near Brisbane or driveable from there.

Many thanks.

  1. Moreton Island is wonderful and the only touristy place there is Tangalooma Wild Dolphin resort. The rest of the Island is a National Park 4WD only. There are a number of camping spots on Moreton and these are all camping in the bush style with basic toilets and showers (cold showers).

You need a permit to camp and a permit to take your 4WD over. There are basically 2 ferry companies that take you over to Moreton. The site bellow tells you about camping on Moreton

Fraiser is also a 4WD only place and you can find some nice areas there to camp and there are camping places available with hot showers etc.

The advantage of Stradbroke Island is that you can access it by normal cars.Stradbroke is quiet pupulated and more commerciliased than the other Islands. However, there are nice places to go there such as Blue Lake and Brown Lake.

  2. It's not easy to be completely self sufficent and camp where you  please as you would probably get moved on by rangers. although saying that there is some literature out which you may find at either bookshops or  the Racq on bush camps around Australia the national parks usually have a smaller fee than caravan parks and they also will tell you what they have. You must remember that there can be hazards such as some hungry dingos on frazer Island and snakes can wander in when they please. The further North you go from Brisbane then the weather should get warmer.

  3. I absolutely agree with Oldemystic, Moreton Island is a fantastic place.

If you want to go further up the coast, about 1300 kms, then the Whitsunday Islands are a must.  Some of these islands can be camped on, and numbers are kept very small, to preserve the pristine quality of the marine park.  The only way to reach the island camping spots is by boat, so you will be very isolated once there and will need to be self sufficient - but it is well worth it.

While Fraser and Straddy are beautiful, they are very touristy now, and in my mind at least this has spoilt them.

  4. Yes, Fraser & Straddie are touristy, but you will be quite able to lose yourself on either. There is also wilderness at the northern end of Bribie. However, urge you to look at Moreton Island. It's only serviced by vehicular ferry a few times a week and remains relatively unspoilt. You can take car (4WD or beach-type vehicle) or walk on/walk off on ferries from Fisherman Island (mouth of Bne River) to Tangalooma or Kooringal (southern Moreton), or from Scarborough to Bulwer (northern Moreton).

  5. Wow... I can't believe someone could call Stradbroke and Fraser islands touristy - and yet moreton is not?!  What the???  Anyway.... I personally hate moreton because everything is so touristy and overpriced.  I grew up going to straddy and love the place... but yes, it still has it's spots for tourists as well.  Most of the islands have self-sufficient areas that are more secluded - just be careful of dingos!
