You might find out by talking to a genealogist from one of the Italian cultural societies research the city they lived in. There are several Italian magazines and newspapers in the US published in English and many genealogists willing to look up probate records in courts. You find out who owned property, paid taxes, etc...There are records in various courts from the 14th century and prior as well as beyond.
