  1. If a boulangerie has "pâtisserie" above it's shop front, it will sell mainly bread, sweet cakes and tarts. Some will sell a small amount of savoury pastry snacks, the majority do not.

A boulangerie which does not mention "pâtisserie" on the shop will usually sell a very large selection of sweet and savoury pastry snacks.  You are usually spoilt for choice!

The majority of bakeries will make their own cakes, tarts, pizzas and of course bread. There are those that will ship in bread called "pain industriel" or pastries, cakes, tarts etc.

Boulangeries who just sell bread without making it are usually known as a "depôt de pain". These are common in small villages that do not have their own shops, and are usually set up and run by the local "mairie" (village hall).

If you are ever in France and want a value for money quality snack, the local boulangerie is the best place to go to.

A shop that makes and sells bread called a boulangerie.

  3. Anywhere there's a kitchen.

  4. It's a little known fact that the French are genetically incapable of producing any form of pastry.  The boulangeries and patisseries are nothing but a clever ruse.  It's all flown in from factories in Shanghai, China.
