we would like to have access to the many activities such as fishing, snorkeling, caves, an island day trip, etc but also need a budget oriented place to stay. there is six people in the group in their early 20's. we have traveled through europe and many parts of belize before. any suggestions would be welcomed. research suggests that many places are crime prone and maybe a place that has a good reputation would be what we are looking for. any ideas?

  1. Well if you are adventerous in the back to nature sort of way... go to the west side of the island.  Aguadilla, Rincon, Isabela, Mayaguez......

Aguadilla and Rincon have the best surfing and relaxing beaches on the island.  So beautiful, so fun!  Aguadilla and Mayaguez have UPR if you are going to college.

I lived there for 4 yrs and it was so great.  The entire nature of this side of the island is so relaxing and fun.  I personally did not want to be around the city with the big building and suits all the time.  I enjoyed going to the metropolitan area maybe a couple times a month.

In aguadilla there are lots of dive & surf shops and instructors.  Aguadilla is also close to Desecheo island. No one lives there but you can boat there and spend the day.  You can just imagine how beautiful, clear, and full of marine life it is out there!  Flip flops rule on this side of the island.  This side of the island has some really nice examples of spaniard architecture.  I recommend checking out the light houses.  This side of the island is also a whole lot less expensive than living in the metro area.  My friend rents and apartment in Isabela for $300 a month has 2 bedrooms and other the usual stuff.  And its about 5 minutes from the beach.  In aguadilla you could probably get something similar priced, lots of people rent out the 2nd story of their house which has been converted in to apartments.  These are usually real cheap.  This guy I know rents his for $250 and it overlooks the ocean.  (I don't really think he knows how great of a property he has though)  Look into it.  The entire nature of PR is gorgeous, I just prefer living away from the city but still close to everything i need and want.

  2. Well, the University in San Juan is in Rio Piedras and you can go anywhere from there easily, but you may have to rent a car to get around

  3. I live in PR and its as crime prone as everywhere else, but tourist places happen to be quite safe, if water activities you want  I suggest try staying in the Fajardo area and also Culebra...if you need anything else feel free to contact me...I live here ;)

  4. It is generally true that tourists are pretty safe.

If you are like me when I was in college,  if would be best to drive during the day to your day time activities, then drive back and walk to night activities. And as 6 young guys, you want to be where there are girls around.  That is Isla Verde!

If you can't find anything in your price range in  Isla Verde or Condado, look into Rincon.  That town has some night life, but you must really look into exactly where- not a ton of night life.  Good snorkeling there though.

If day time activities are as important as your night time activities, then stay in the place you found in  Loiza.  Then just drive to SJ or Pinones for the night life.  You are equidistant between most daytime activities you mentioned and the best night time activities.

Just make sure to designate a driver!

  5. Fajardo is deffinetly the best place for you.

Keep in mind that this is not Irak, we are as crime prone as any other country you might visit, we have our good parts and bad parts.

Feel open to contact me at any moment

I'm a college student as well so i might be able to tell you about a couple of places around the island you may want to hang out at.
